The Murdock breed is the result of an intuitive and organic approach to poultry raising, inspired by my vision of creating a flock that thrives in a more natural, less domesticated environment. Named after A-Team character, Murdocks are more than your everyday bird—they're a way of rethinking how poultry can integrate into our daioy lives and ecosystems.This breed is uniquely cold-hardy, raised without supplemental heat during harsh winters. They endure the elements with just enough shelter to protect them from snow, allowing them to develop remarkable resilience and flock intelligence. While this approach results in fewer eggs, the flock is highly intelligent, adaptable, and hardy. Over time, they’ve naturally evolved smaller combs and bodies to better suit their environment, embodying survival over production.Murdocks are primarily a mix of Americanas, with a touch of Buckeye and the ancient Scottish Dumpy. The Scottish Dumpy, my personal favorite, has left an indelible mark on the flock's DNA. These birds bring a distinct personality and wisdom to the breed, moving differently and occasionally producing shorter-legged offspring. This unique trait makes them gentler on gardens, as they scratch less, making them ideal for more integrated homesteads.What makes Murdocks truly special is their heterozygosity—their diverse genetic makeup that strengthens their ability to adapt and thrive. By allowing natural breeding and commingling, I’ve fostered a flock with unparalleled variation. Each bird carries a mix of one-of-a-kind traits, creating a lineage that blends ancient wisdom with modern hardiness. This is a breed built for survival, intelligence, and connection to nature.I started this journey after moving to Detroit in twenty twelve with a dream of sustainable farming, and poultry became the centerpiece of that vision.
